Zelenskyy Calls For U.S., European Action Against Russia After Deadly Palm Sunday Attack On Ukraine
Zelenskyy’s call followed the deadly Russian missile strike that tore through the northeastern city of Sumy on Palm Sunday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday called on the United States, European allies, and the international community for an urgent response against Russia over its sustained attacks and killings of Ukrainians.
Zelenskyy’s call followed the deadly Russian missile strike that tore through the northeastern city of Sumy on Palm Sunday.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that a Russian missile attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy killed more than 20 people, as confirmed by local officials on Sunday.
The deadly strike occurred as residents gathered to mark Palm Sunday, one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar.
The city’s acting mayor, Artem Kobzar, said two ballistic missiles hit the city centre during the morning hours, according to AP.
The impact caused widespread destruction, striking a public square where families had assembled to celebrate the religious holiday.
In a sombre statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Zelenskyy described the attack as a “horrific Russian ballistic missile strike” that targeted a quiet city street, shattering homes, educational institutions, and civilian vehicles on a day traditionally devoted to peace and worship.
“Russian missiles hit an ordinary city street, ordinary life – residential buildings, educational institutions, cars on the street… And that’s on the day when people go to church – Palm Sunday, the feast of the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem,” Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy noted that emergency services were conducting rescue operations at the site, with medical and emergency personnel working through the night to aid victims and search for survivors.
Calling the perpetrators “filthy scum,” Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the families of those killed while reinforcing his urgent appeal for a stronger international response.
“The world must respond firmly. The United States, Europe, everyone in the world who wants this war and these killings to end,” he said.
“Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging this war out. Without pressure on Russia, peace is impossible.”
Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s continued use of ballistic missiles and aerial bombardment, asserting that diplomatic dialogue alone has proven ineffective in stopping the violence.
“Talks have never stopped ballistic missiles and aerial bombs. What’s needed is an attitude toward Russia that a terrorist deserves,” he said, thanking global allies who have supported Ukraine’s defence efforts
The strike marks another tragic escalation in the ongoing war, which has now stretched into its third year, with civilian populations frequently bearing the brunt of attacks.
