Who Will Replace Tinubu As ECOWAS Chairman
Sources from Punch Newspaper have confirmed that the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have agreed to elect Senegalese President, Bassirou Faye, as the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government.
This decision comes as Nigerian President Bola Tinubu prepares to step down after completing his term as ECOWAS Chairman.
President Tinubu is currently hosting 11 fellow West African leaders at the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, taking place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
The meeting commenced at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
This summit marks Tinubu’s final engagement as Chairman, a role he assumed on July 9, 2023, following his election in Guinea-Bissau.
He was re-elected for a second one-year term on July 7, 2024, also in Abuja.
Ahead of the leadership transition, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, hinted at the change during the closing session of the 94th Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers on Friday night.
In his words, “As the agenda of the Summit we endorsed indicated, the election of a new Chair of Authority, this may be my last Council Session as the Chair of this Council.”
Though the information as regards the new chairman has not been officially disclosed.
