UNICAL students break silence after 7 years of study ends in forced withdrawal

Over 300 students from the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery at the University of Calabar, UNICAL have reportedly broken their silence after their admissions were withdrawn.

The affected students, who have spent seven years in the institution, were asked to leave following an over-admission issue that violated the quota approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

This development was shared in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by user @dammiedammie35, who revealed that the students were instructed to vacate the program despite nearing graduation.

The situation comes days after reports emerged that the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, directed the withdrawal of hundreds of students in the Dentistry and Dental Surgery faculty due to the university exceeding its approved admission quota.

Amid growing backlash, one of the affected students spoke out in a video, pleading for public support.

In his words: “Seven years ago, the University of Calabar admitted us into this fine institution with the hope that after a certain period, we would graduate and practice without issues. Fast forward to now — they’re telling us to leave. After spending seven years, passing exams, reading, staying up countless nights trying to make this dream work — we’re told to go.”

The student made several other emotional remarks, sparking reactions online and drawing sympathy from many Nigerians.
