The Executive Chairman of Akoko North West Local Government, Hon. Esan Owolabi, has issued a statement addressing the growing concern of insecurity in the community.
The recent attack in Ekuru, Kwara State, and the Owo Church massacre are stark reminders that no community is immune to danger. The Executive Chairman assures citizens that the local government will not take these threats lightly and will take proactive measures to safeguard its people and land.
The statement proposes the following measures to enhance security:
1. _Community-led Vigilance_: Establish government-approved vigilance teams to work with Amotekun.
2. _Effective Communication_: Create strong communication lines through WhatsApp groups, radio alerts, and reporting channels.
3. _Support for Amotekun_: Provide community support and pressure the state government to equip Amotekun better.
4. _Documentation_: Record and document suspicious activities and threats.
5. _Land Reform_: Ensure discipline in land matters, with proper records and verification.
6. _Cultural Unity_: Foster cultural unity, respect for elders, and support for grassroots leaders.
7. _Accountability_: Hold leaders accountable through peaceful pressure and community meetings.
8. _Community Education_: Educate the community on rights, reporting incidents, and identifying danger signs.
The Executive Chairman calls on all stakeholders to come together and take ownership of their security, emphasizing that together, they can build a safer Akoko North West Local Government.
“We will not wait for tragedy to strike before we act. We will learn from Ekuru and Owo, and build a brighter future for ourselves and our children,” the statement reads.
