The Collapse of Opposition Parties in Nigeria and the Futility of Coalition Politics

Nigeria’s political landscape has witnessed a steady decline in the strength and viability of opposition parties, forcing them into desperate coalitions rather than building sustainable platforms. This trend exposes a fundamental weakness: the inability of these so-called “big names” in the opposition to nurture and fund a political party from the ground up. Instead, they rely on opportunistic alliances, jumping from one platform to another whenever their personal ambitions are at stake.
The Era of True Party Builders vs. Today’s Opportunists
In the past, Nigeria had visionary leaders like Solomon Lar, Jim Nwobodo, Jerry Gana, and Alex Ekwueme who painstakingly formed and built the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into a formidable structure. These were men who understood party politics, invested in institutional growth, and ensured that their parties had a national presence. Many of today’s opposition leaders—Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi rode on the back of the PDP’s strong foundation to power, yet they lack the capacity to replicate such dedication in building new parties.
Instead, they prefer to hijack existing platforms whenever elections approach, demonstrating a lack of commitment to democratic ideals. A true political party is funded and sustained by its members, but in Nigeria, politicians like Atiku only open their wallets during primaries to buy delegates then disappear after losing, only to resurface in the next election cycle. Peter Obi on the other hand, failed to provide leadership in the Labour Party, allowing internal crises to fester while he took sides with factions, further weakening the party. Now, with his ambition in shambles, he is forced to seek refuge in another party that others have labored to sustain.
Amaechi after losing the APC presidential primaries in 2022, expected preferential treatment but was sidelined. Rather than staying to rebuild, he abandoned the party, joining forces with Atiku and Obi in a desperate bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. This pattern reveals a lack of ideological conviction these men are not driven by nation-building but by personal vendettas and the lifelong obsession with becoming president.
The Deceptive One-Term Promise: A Scam from the Pit of Hell
One of the most laughable claims by these opposition figures is that they will fix Nigeria’s problems in just four years How can Atiku or Obi claim they will undo 40 years of systemic failure in a single term? This is nothing but a SCAM a desperate attempt to sell a false hope to Nigerians. If 24 years of democracy (since 1999) has not solved Nigeria’s deep-rooted issues, how will four years under these recycled politicians make any difference?
Their ambition is not about Nigeria’s progress but about fulfilling a lifelong dream of occupying Aso Rock None of them has presented a clear, actionable plan beyond the usual rhetoric of “removing Tinubu.” What exactly do they intend to do differently? Where is their blueprint for economic revival, security, or infrastructure?
Nigeria Needs Courageous Leadership, Not Ethnic Bigots
What Nigeria needs is bold, decisive leadership leaders who take tough decisions without fear of political backlash President Tinubu demonstrated this with the removal of fuel subsidy a move that even Buhari avoided for eight years He followed it up with critical tax reforms ensuring a more robust economy by expanding the tax net while protecting vulnerable businesses.
Unlike the opposition’s empty promises, Tinubu’s administration has:
Ended the wasteful fuel subsidy regime
Passed groundbreaking tax reforms to stimulate economic growth
Cleared Nigeria’s IMF debt, boosting foreign reserves
✔ Maintained a unified exchange rate eliminating the corrupt dual system
Conclusion: Nigerians Must Reject Coalition of Desperation
The so-called opposition coalition is nothing but a gathering of frustrated politicianswho lack the discipline to build a party and the vision to lead Nigeria forward. Their only agenda is power for power’s sake not national development.
Nigerians must see through their deception and continue supporting a government that is making hard but necessary decisions for the country’s future. President Tinubu’s reforms may be painful now, but they lay the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria
