Staff members of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), have begun a three-day peaceful protest against the planned meeting of the Governing Council.
The protest, which started on Monday, August 25, will run through Thursday, August 28, coinciding with the Council’s scheduled meeting.
JAC said the action followed the Government Gazette, which indicted the Governing Council in three sections. The union maintained that the indictment stripped the Council of its legitimacy to oversee the University’s affairs.
It also argued that allowing the Council to sit would violate the principle of natural justice, stressing that no one should be a judge in his or her own case.
The union called for the immediate implementation of the Government’s White Paper on the Visitation Panel Report and demanded the dissolution of the Governing Council.
JAC vowed not to allow the meeting to hold and pledged to continue its protest and media engagement until the government of Ondo State intervenes in this matter.
The protest has remained peaceful, with members converging daily on campus from 8 a.m. as planned by JAC.
