Paul Biya, the longtime president of Cameroon, passed away today at the age of 91, after leading the country for 42 years. Biya, who came to power in 1982 following the resignation of his predecessor Ahmadou Ahidjo, was Africa’s second-longest-serving leader. His rule spanned multiple generations, with many Cameroonians under the age of 41 knowing no other president besides Biya.

Biya’s tenure was marked by political maneuvering that enabled him to consolidate power, including surviving a 1984 coup attempt and introducing limited political reforms under international pressure. While he allowed multiparty elections starting in the 1990s, his repeated re-elections were marred by allegations of electoral fraud. His grip on power also saw the implementation of economic reforms, privatization, and cuts to civil servant salaries, causing hardship for many citizens.
