A 22-year-old Islamic cleric, Imam Idris Abubakar, has allegedly sodomised two pupils under his tutelage in Adamawa State.

Almajirai are children, usually from poor rural backgrounds, who leave their hometowns to study Islamic learning with teachers of the Quran.

“He often asked the two of us to wait behind after every round of Quranic lessons, then he would call us one after the other into his room and molest us,” the 10-year-old boy said.

Also speaking, the mother of the 11-year-old boy, said, “I noticed something was wrong when my son frequently complained about pains around his lower abdomen.

“I probed and had to threaten him before he opened up and told me that the Imam had been abusing him through the anus.”

It was gathered that the cleric threatened to kill the boys if they dared to tell anyone about the sexual abuse.

The spokesperson for the police in Adamawa State, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the situation to SaharaReporters on Sunday. He, however, added that the Imam is now in police custody and has denied committing the crime.

“The Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, has ordered discreet investigation into the matter and subsequent prosecution of the suspect,” Nguroje said
