Nigeria seeks stronger bilateral ties with Japan

Japan’s Foreign Minister, Ms Kamikawa Yoko, on Saturday, met with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in a significant step towards deepening bilateral relations.

Their meeting was on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development Ministerial Meeting.

The meeting, which was held in Tokyo, focused on enhancing cooperation in various sectors, particularly business and economic relations.

This was according to a press statement issued by the Third Secretary, Culture and Information/General/ Protocol Section, Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, Shimada Mami.

Yoko expressed her appreciation for the constructive dialogues that took place during her visit to Nigeria in April this year.

She emphasised Japan’s interest in fostering stronger economic ties, including support for start-ups, as part of a broader effort to enhance the partnership between the two nations.

During her visit to Nigeria, Yoko observed the challenges faced by internally displaced women, leading her to advocate for initiatives grounded in the Women, Peace, and Security framework.

She reiterated Japan’s commitment to collaborating with Nigeria to address global issues, praising Nigeria’s leadership in Africa and its shared democratic values.

“Kamikawa stated that she had observed the serious situation facing internally displaced women during her visit to Nigeria this April, which had made her realise the need for initiatives based on women, peace, and security perspective.

“She also stated that Japan intends to deepen cooperation to solve global challenges with Nigeria, a leader among African countries sharing values and principles such as democracy,” the statement read in part.

Tuggar responded positively, acknowledging the concrete progress achieved through the TICAD process.

He expressed gratitude for Japan’s ongoing support and conveyed Nigeria’s eagerness to further strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation.

The meeting concluded with both ministers reaffirming their commitment to deepening Japan-Nigeria relations as they prepare for the upcoming TICAD 9, set to take place next year.
