National grid collapses again, making third time in one week

The national electricity grid has collapsed again, marking the third occurrence this week and plunging many parts of Nigeria into darkness.

While the cause of the latest collapse is yet to be confirmed, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had previously attributed frequent grid failures to complex issues involving various stakeholders in the power sector.

Nafisat Ali, the executive director of TCN’s Independent System Operator (ISO), discussed these challenges during a Senate committee hearing in April.

As of 9:00 AM, all distribution companies reported zero megawatts of power:
1. Abuja Disco: 0 MW
2. Benin Disco: 0 MW
3. Eko Disco: 0 MW
4. Enugu Disco: 0 MW
5. Ibadan Disco: 0 MW
6. Ikeja Disco: 0 MW
7. Jos Disco: 0 MW
8. Kaduna Disco: 0 MW
9. Kano Disco: 0 MW
10. Port Harcourt Disco: 0 MW
11. Yola Disco: 0 MW

The total power output currently stands at 0 MW, significantly lower than the expected 4,800 MW.
