I have been canvassing support for the former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Tanko Umar Al-Makura, to be the National Chairman of the party. Because the Senator is a unifier in the party who would deliver the mandate of APC at the general elections.

Al-Makura had over the years exemplified remarkable leadership roles needed to lead the party. Senator Almakura is the best option to lead the party.

My decision to adopt Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura as the next APC National Chairman is not far-fetched; it is based on his track records, credibility, love for his people, and integrity possessed by the person of Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura.

“He has over the years exemplified remarkable leadership roles devoid of tribalism, religious sentiment, and bias. Hence, part of my resolve is to give him the required support, canvass for supporters and ensure that he emerges as the APC National Chairman.

“Our party, APC deserves a leader that has human feelings and is passionate about transformation and development of our beloved country, Nigeria.”

Al-Makura depicts the lion: he moves quietly, but shows mettle, and strength when the chips are down. In 2011, for instance, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was the dominant party in his native Nasarawa State, toyed with the lion’s tail over the governorship ticket. Al-Makura picked the ticket of the newly formed Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) where he beat the PDP.

However, it was not by any chance his political baptism. In 1980, Al-Makura was already the Youth Leader of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the old Plateau State. The NPN was the ruling party in Nigeria, but the main opposition in old Plateau State, which was then controlled by the Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP) and those who knew the young Al-Makura said he was a hard nut to crack.

Sen. Almakura’s impact on the lives of countless individuals and communities is a testament to his remarkable leadership and vision. He is a true political gladiator, and his legacy will continue to inspire and influence generations to come.

The APC must learn from both its past experiences and the experiences of other parties in taking the bold decision on who will lead the party.

We have witnessed how during the Second Republic, the personality of the national chairman of the party galvanized support and vigour for the party.

We should learn from the recent experience of the opposition PDP which is still groping in the dark.

The APC cannot afford to toe that line which result is failure.

This was why I suggested Senator Tanko Al-makura as the cut out choice for the national chairman of the APC.

Recall how Almakura was able to defeat an incumbent using the platform of a nascent party, the CPC to become governor of Nasarawa State.

For those of us who have been in politics for a while, we know that defeating an incumbent which has the support of the central government at
the state level.

CHAPTER ONE.

NO ONE IS WORTHY AND BATTLE READY TO BE THE APC NATIONAL CHAIRMAN THAN THE INDEFATIGABLE SERVANT LEADER SENATOR AL-MAKURA:

Senator Al-Makura remained the only leader who posses the political will and ideology that can bring the balance and sustainability that APC as the largest political party in Africa needs at this point to drive her to the highest pinnacle. And just like the iron ore, the fiery furnace of complexities, controversies and complications of the processes has refined and transformed him into the unbendable steel that will fit into the role of the Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Al-Makura have been able to survive the series of political conspiracies, betrayals, and indignation orchestated against him by his closest Political allies and those he called ‘My good friends’. But amidst the several attempts to dim his political light, it’s ember have ended up being fanned even more as he continue to remain the strongest and most formidable contender for the apex office of the APC.

If you have been keenly following the Politics of Nigeria, assuming the office of National leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) remained the most complex, complicated and controversial political battlefield. These complexities, complications and controversies are owed to the actions and inactions of the major political actors in the race to take the mantle of leadership of the APC as a ruling party and the nucleus of the government. And that’s where Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura comes in.

He continued to play the role of a perfect pivot, the uncomplaining dustbin accommodating so many trashes. He refused to be tamed in the name of playing the Loyalty Card because he understand that a Political arena like the leadership of the APC at this time does not have room for weak and compromising LEADERSHIP.

records of innovative leadership, TA’AL will bring aboard his wealth of experience and political energy to stabilize the party when elected. And like a precious gem that he is, the series of political friction and politicking have polished him into a perfect leader that will take our dearest party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to an enviable height.

Al-makura is the leader APC needs at the moment, with available data showing that he is an outstanding personality who has the capacity to properly lead the party.”

Sen Tanko Al-makura was well known as an efficient result-driven governor during his tenure and he is an exceptional man who deserves recognition and respect. He recorded huge successes as a governor in the areas of capital and human developments through good governance.

Giving insights into the process leading to the merger of the legacy parties that gave rise to the formation of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari, reminiscing in a foreword to a book, “Power of Possibility and Politics of Change in Nigeria” written by the immediate past Director-General of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Comrade Salihu Mohammed Lukman, who said all the four parties came to the “painful realisation” that none of them could defeat PDP as separate entities, hence the need for them to merge.

Throwing more light on the matter,, the president was quoted as saying: “At one point, we in the four former opposition parties, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), came to the painful realisation that there was no way we could defeat the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as separate entities without coming together as a united force.

“So, having agreed to come together, we decided to set up committees to look into how we can best merge to form a formidable opposition party. After that each of the four parties developed the terms of reference for the committees on the modalities of the negotiations for the merger.

“We, however, made it clear that none of the committees has the power to take any final decision on the merger. Their work was mainly to discuss with their party members and report the outcome of the discussion to the leadership of their parties”

Subsequently, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), registered the APC on July 31, 2013 as announced by the then secretary to the commission, Abdullahi Kaugama.

Indeed, for Al-makura, this merger which his former party, the CPC entered into, remains evergreen because it presents to him equal footing as a founding member of the APC. Certainly, Al-Makura was integral to all the meetings and decisions that were taken, towards the formation of the APC. He is indeed, an apostle of the policy and philosophy thrust of the APC, whose words, actions and body language, constitutes the cement binding the ruling party into a formidable political party, not the usual alliance solely for the purpose of power.
As far as the APC is concerned, Senator Al-makura has paid his dues. From providing the platform for the CPC to join the negotiations, being the only governor from the party, Al-makura has continued to serve the party diligently and with unalloyed loyalty..

It suffice to say that, in deference to this selfless commitment to the party, the APC has always found Al-makura worthy of undertaking certain national assignments. .

In fact, barely one week after the APC was registered, Al-makura agreed to host the maiden meeting of the APC Governors Forum in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital. This was against the backdrop of expectations from stakeholders who have resolved that the ideals of the merger must be realized by state governments on the platform of the new party, to convince Nigerians that the party has their interests at heart.
Speaking to journalists on the agenda of the meeting, then governor Al-makura, posited that the registration of the APC marked the beginning of challenges.
“We did not go into this historic merger just because we want to win an election. It is not just for the fun of it, or even changing the PDP as a government.

There is something more fundamental about the mere change we are seeking. We must have a different system from what we are trying to change to justify the essence of this merger. Already we have made history by having the very first ideal merger in this country. What happened since independence have been alliances and accords which brought about the amalgamation of various interests together, for the purpose of winning votes. And that is why such accords frittered as soon as elections were over.”

He said for the APC, a fundamental issue is to try and sensitize and enlighten the people about the party’s philosophies, values and ideologies.
Al-Makura said the agenda of the meeting is only one.

“We have only one agenda; moving the country forward in a more acceptable, democratically and constitutional manner. We are going to further fine tune it into a forum where we as governors of APC will be sitting to share views, ideas, exchange ideas so that by our actions, programmes and activities, our disposition as governors, we will be identical; we are going to discuss how we will further the implementation of social justice.”

Then again, in May, 2018 precisely, Al-makura was appointed by the APC to chair the party’s five-member primary election committee to elect the APC flag bearer for the 2018 Ekiti governorship election, after the party declaried that it has no preferential candidate.
Then National Organizing Secretary of the party, Senator Osita Izunaso, who stood in for the national chairman of the party, charged the committee to be fair to all contestants in the Ekiti State guber election.

“If we conduct a transparent primary, any aspirant that wins will surely become the next governor of Ekiti state… The party has no preferred candidate, there is no such thing in our lexicon. It does not exist. All aspirants are equal until after the election” Izunaso stated.
In his response, then governor Al-makura, as the Chairman of the Primary Election Committee thanked the party for considering members of the committee worthy to carry out the critical and important assignment at that point in time.

“As far as we are concerned, we consider this assignment as a family affair which has to be done in strict conformity with our party’s guidelines and the constitution. I wish to assure the National Working Committee that by the special Grace of God, we as members of the Ekiti governorship primary will do justice to this exercise.

“We will ensure free and fair election, conformity and adherence to all the guidelines so that by the time the exercise is over, the party will become stronger and more cohesive. This will be the beginning of the assurance of our great party to reclaim the mandate in Ekiti state” he stated.

As promised, Al-makura successfully carried out the assignment and APC went ahead to win the guber election in Ekiti State.

Also, and ahead of the 2019 general election, the party still found Al-makura worthy to lead the Post Primary Reconciliation Committee of the APC for the Northeast states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe.
This was in the attempt to resolve conflicts that erupted during the party primaries.

Al-makura, who was in Bauchi to address the cases that erupted from Bauchi and Gombe states respectively, said the committee was in the state with a view to addressing and resolving all emergent issues after the party primaries and also to actualise effective reconciliation of all aggrieved parties.
While assuring all aggrieved aspirants of fair hearing and justice, he said the intention was to engage and interact with them with a view to promoting amicable resolution and better understanding within the APC family.
“I want to assure you that me and my colleagues we will discharge our duties with high sense of responsibility, without fear or favour, we will be just and fair by giving everyone of you a fair hearing, at the end of the day we will articulate all the views and positions put before us and make necessary recommendations to the progress of our great party,” he stated.

Al-makura said the reconciliation process was dear and important to the party because the party need the full support of its members in the north east to effectively execute its plan to retain political power in 2019.

“The party and President Muhammadu Buhari holds you, in Bauchi State, and the North east zone in very high esteem. We rely on your support to succeed,” Al-makura was then quoted as saying.
Being a former governor and now senator, Al-makura has continued to wax stronger as a true apostle and ambassador of the APC. He remains at the forefront of defending and projecting the ideals of the party especially on the floor of the Red Chamber, where he has continued to do the APC proud through engaging in robust debates on pressing national issues, as well as propounding bills that have impact on the lives of Nigerians.

Thus, it’s no wonder that Almakura’s name continue to feature prominently among those contesting to occupy the seat of the National Chairman of the APC. With such a towering profile, Al-makura is sure to dwarf any contender, especially that he was part and parcel of the process that gave birth to the APC.

Not only that, two of the four legacy parties namely ACN and ANPP, have alternately produced previous national chairmen of the party. John Odigwe Oyegun was the first national chairman of the APC. He held the office from July 2013 to July 2018. He was a member of the defunct ANPP. On the other hand, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who succeeded Oyegun, was from the defunct ACN. He was in office July 24, 2018 to June 16, 2020. Even the current National Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee Chairman, Mai Mala Buni, is of the ANPP extraction.

It’s generally agreed therefore, that the next national chairman of the party, should come from the defunct CPC block, especially that President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure is coming to an end come 2023.

That aside, Al-makura has the character and temperament, to knit the party together and to ensure success of the APC in 2023. He has been under intense tutelage under the founder and leader of the defunct CPC, President Muhammadu Buhari. It’s agreeable that, with Buhari out of the political sphere come 2023, Senator Al-makura will necessarily fit in as the right replacement, as far as maintaining the core values that necessitated the formation of the APC is concerned..

No wonder that his recent declaration in Lafia, to gun for the position of the national chairman of the APC, reverberated through the length and breadth of the country. Al-makura indeed, has the golden key that will unlock the immense potentials of the APC to grow into the truly largest political party in Africa. .

Already, he enjoins tremendous support from across the country but particularly from his home state, where his successor and Governor of Nasarawa State, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, has continuously made case for the party to zone the position of the national chairman of the APC to the North Central geopolitical zone..

Engineer Sule has on many occasions, thrown his weight behind Al-makura emergence as the next national chairman of the party. .

Declaring his interest to seek to occupy the position of the national chairman of the APC, Senator Al-makura in Lafia recently, said his aspiration was borne out of his commitment to further project the good works of President Muhammadu Buhari..

He spoke at the grand finale of the party’s local government elections campaign rally for the Nasarawa South senatorial district, which held in Lafia..

“I feel this time is auspicious. And the venue of this grand finale is important. Today, I take the opportunity of this event to make a declaration of my aspiration to contest for the office of APC national chairman in the coming convention..

“I consider this important because this is my base. This is my local government where my ward and even the zonal headquarters is. This is where my umbilical cord that gave rise to my political aspiration is..

“I, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, wish to contest for the position of APC chairman. I am doing this to ensure cohesion, party unity, ensure that those values and attributes that came with the emergence of the legacy parties are kept alive,” he stated..

Though it is clear there are some Aspirants aspiring to occupy the position of the national chairman of the APC, but truly when the chips are down, only Senator Al-makura can fit the cap.

CHAPTER TWO.

ONLY FEW
LEADERS HAVE MADE AS INDELIBLE A MARK AS SENATOR UMAR TANKO AL-MAKURA:

In the annals of Nasarawa State’s history, few leaders have made as indelible a mark as Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura. His tenure as Governor, followed by his role as a Senator in the 9th Nigerian Senate, has been characterized by visionary projects that have not only propelled Nasarawa State to new heights but have also positioned it among the most progressive states in Nigeria.

Through a series of transformative initiatives,
Senator Al-Makura has laid the foundation for sustainable development and economic growth, ensuring that the state remains competitive and attractive to investors. Only few who whatever one does, they will still say it is not done properly.

• Cargo Airport, A Gateway To Investment And Economic Growth:
One of Senator Al-Makura’s most significant achievements as Governor was the initiation of the Cargo Airport Project. This strategic infrastructure, designed to boost trade and attract foreign and local investors, has become a critical asset for Nasarawa State.

Having recognized that leadership is about the people, not just personal agendas, he invited the student union leaders to a conversation purposely to interact with them as critical stakeholders and potential leaders of the future.

The parley, described by the Chairman, Advisory Committee of the Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura Campaign Organization, as unprecedented and the first of its kind, also afforded the lawmaker the opportunity to listen to the concerns of Nasarawa State students, a commitment that futher sets him apart as a leader who truly cares.

The student union leaders invited to the conversation include the presidents of NASSA from, Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa; Nasarawa State University, Keffi; College of Education, Akwanga; College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Lafia; Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, and the Federal University of Lafia, alongside their various executive councils.

Also at the interaction were stakeholders of NASSA, including the national executive council of the union, former presidents of NASSA and presidents of indigenous ethnic associations from the six institutions of higher learning.
Long before now.

“We will continue to do our best to see to the betterment of education in our society. I have a platform where I support the less privilege. That’s why I do everything possible to give back to the society, to bring civilization to my people, in line with what contemporary leaders do all over the world,” he stated.

In his opening remarks during his conversation with the students, Senator Almakura said the essence of the interaction was for the participants to listen to each other with a view to understanding the challenges confronting the students, as well as proffers solution to some of these challenges.

“When we invest in you, we are investing on the society. When we invest in you, we are investing in the most important sector of humanity. We owe ourselves the duty to tell you only those things that will make you the right future leaders,” he said.

The conversation equally provided him the opportunity to speak to the students about his interest to be coming the APC National Chairman and to as well present before them what he has in store especially for the educational sector of the state.

He added that having recognized the importance of information technology in driving progress, it his desire to give youths the best form of education that will make them competitive anywhere they find themselves.

By embracing these pillars, Senator Almakura said his plan will lay the groundwork for comprehensive and sustainable progress, driving inclusive prosperity and resilience for the party.

He emphasized that with a focus on economic growth and leveraging APC resources and strategic advantages, the party will embark on a transformative path toward a prosperous future for all its members.

As leaders of tomorrow, he saw the need to urge them to shun politics of division, where some mediocres and opportunists who venture into politics with nothing tangible to offer, engage in spreading sentiments and disunity.

He particularly urged them to be wary of such mediocres and opportunists who for lack of what to give to the society, dwell more on fueling disunity and ethno-religious sentiments.

“We are where we are today because we leveraged on our youths. We also leveraged on our youthful days to package ourselves and deliver to the society. There were so many things that we were doing as students union that contributed immensely to the level that we are today socially, politically, religiously and traditionally.

“Everything that existed yesterday, exist today. But what then is the problem? In our days of unionism, nobody was good enough in the society for us to organize ourselves and give him or her an award. Students union in our days never gave anybody an award. Today student unions are everywhere involved and engaged in giving awards. That is what the day has brought. But who are the recipients of these awards? If you give award to people that deserve award, it makes the society better because it serves as encouragement and motivation. It becomes realistic and respectful. But if you give award to mediocres that call themselves politicians, you are destroying the society,” he added.

Senator Almakura said he is championing a leadership approach that transcends ethnic and religious boundaries and that he will strive to build a society where friendships are built on shared values, not differences.

The conversation provided the opportunity also for stakeholders of the Nasarawa State Students Association to resolve the lingering impasse involving the leadership of the association with two factions claiming the seat of the national president of NASSA. At a separate fora organized by the lawmaker, the matter was put to rest after one of the factional leaders stepped aside for peace to reign within the association.

“These are quite commendable because an educated society is a rich society. An educated society is an empowered society,” he said.

“The whole essence of today’s engagement is to listen to each other. We have listened to your problems. Of course, we are duty bound to respond to those problems in the best way we can. But permit me to say that responding to those problems will not end our problems in life. Because livelihoods is synonymous to problems,” he stated.

 

CHAPTER FIVE.

SENATOR UMAR TANKO AL-MAKURA IS A LIMIT BREAKER UNLIKE MOST PRIVILEGED INDIVIDUALS WHO ALWAYS WEAR GARMENTS OF ARROGANCE:

Apart from his excellent performance as Governor, Senator Al-Makura brought a worthy successor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, and delivered Nasarawa to APC at all levels, making it a progressive state. Despite moving to the senate in 2019 after his eight years tenure as governor, Al-Makura continued to be a rallying point for APC in the state and a beacon of hope to the people of the state – always sacrificing his time, energy and resources for the victory of the party and the development of the state, making him a factor to reckon with in the politics, governance and development of the state.

In his theory of man and greatness William Shakespeare asserted that “some are born great, some achieve greatness and others have greatness thrust upon them”. But for Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the architect of modern Nasarawa state, despite having the privilege of coming from a great, influential and reputable family, he never allowed his family high horse to determine his life struggles and future.

Unlike most privileged individuals who always wear the garments of arrogance especially in their dealings with the less privileged, Al-Makura detests pomposity and is always down to earth. His humility, simplicity, respect for human dignity and love for the common man which knows no bounds remain the driving force of his success in life. He believes in making his own history which is why he continues to work hard to achieve greatness.

There is no doubt that, when the history of progressive politics in Nigeria is written, especially that of the governing All Progressive Congress (APC) in Nasarawa state, Al-Makura’s name will boldly inscribed in the front banner as one of its founding fathers, whose efforts, sacrifices and commitment gave birth successes and victories of the party.

Suffice to say Nasarawa state had hitherto been the stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since the return to democracy in 1999. But in the build up to 2011 elections, when a progressive minded politician and successful business man called Umaru Tanko Al-Makura decided to rescue the people of Nasarawa state by heeding their clarion call to vie for the gubernatorial seat of the state on CPC platform. This ended PDP’s 12 years misrule in the state and took Nasarawa state on the path of progressive politics.

His emergence as CPC governorship candidate in 2011, which was initially dismissed by the then ruling PDP, turned out to be their greatest albatross when his acceptability and popularity began to spread across the state with people moving into CPC in their numbers in solidarity with him and his ambition.

His growing popularity and acceptability among the people forced the PDP government to declare war on Al-Makura and his party. The government deployed all coercive apparatus against him, leading to his arrest, detention and victimisation in a desperate effort to frustrate him out of the race. But Al-Makura remained undeterred and successfully sent PDP to political oblivion.

His emergence as governor, which should have been a huge relief for him, marked the beginning of his travails as PDP and other retrogressive elements decided to make the state ungovernable for him using their numerical strength in the state house of assembly to strangulate his administration after his refusal to dump CPC for PDP. He is the only politician in Nigeria’s history to survive several impeachment attempts. He did not only survive the impeachment and put his detractors to shame but his victory as the only CPC governor in Nigeria qualified the party to go into a merger with other opposition parties which gave birth to the APC.

As one of the founding fathers of the party, Al-Makura continued to be at vanguard of attracting individuals ,opposition stalwarts and groups into the party which added to the woos of PDP and other opposition in the state sending them into political oblivion.

His leadership qualities, competency, credibility and more importantly his intimidating records of achievements which make him the best governor Nasarawa has ever produced since its creation, nailed the opposition parties in the state. PDP was reduced to mere political spectators in Nasarawa politics as Al-Makura attracted even those who did not share his vision for a prosperous Nasarawa state to APC.

His sterling leadership qualities and visionary, progressive thoughts and ideas as well as his tireless contributions to the success and sustenance of the party made party stakeholders in Nasarawa and across the country to drag him into the contest for APC national chairmanship which he almost won.

Unfortunately, some elements opposed to the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu presidential project frustrated Al-Makura’s emergence as APC national chairman, believing he was working for Tinubu. The cabal dragged former Governor Abdullahi Adamu from the same Nasarawa state as Al-Makura into the race and successfully hoodwinked President Muhammadu Buhari to impose Adamu as a consensus candidate.

Most of those who plotted against Al-Makura must by now be regretting their action which robbed APC of a golden opportunity to witness its best moment which Al-Makura’s leadership of the party would have provided. But despite their political coup against Al-Makura and Tinubu, they couldn’t stop Tinubu from picking the party’s presidential ticket and getting elected as Nigeria’s president.

As president Tinubu has taken over governance and constitute his cabinet, so there is no better, competent, credible and most suitable personality to represent Nasarawa state as the APC National Chairman than the architect of modern Nasarawa state, Distinguish Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura. Al-Makura has paid his dues for the APC, the Tinubu presidential project as well as in the politics, governance and development of Nasarawa state.

CHAPTER SIX.

WHY THE GOOD PEOPLE OF NASARAWA STATE SUPPORTS SENATOR UMAR TANKO AL-MAKURA FOR APC CHAIRMANSHIP:

Nasarawa State is ready to support Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura in his journey to become the National Chairman of the APC (All Progressives Congress).

In Lafia, to the elation of his teaming supporters, Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura made a solemn declaration, unequivocally throwing his hat in the ring as he expressed in very clear terms his decision to vie for the exalted position of the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Al-Makura said during the declaration that his desire to become the national chairman of the APC was borne out of his conviction to safeguard the good tenets of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Making his desire to mount the exalted position of the APC national chairman public in Lafia, Al-Makura said: “Today, I take this opportunity to make a declaration about my aspiration for the office of the APC national chairman. I consider this important because this is my base. This is my Local Government Area where my ward and even the zonal headquarters are. This is where my umbilical cord that gave rise to my political aspiration lies.

“I, Umar Tanko Al-Makura, wish to mount the position of APC chairman. I am doing this to ensure cohesion, party unity. To ensure that those values and attributes that came with the emergence of the legacy parties have been kept alive.”

The former Nasarawa State governor was optimistic that he knows as a matter of fact that he was one of those who participated in the merger exercise that Nigerians have shown unity and commitment to national harmony, to inclusiveness, to Nigeria politics. He maintained that the reason all the legacy parties abandoned their tendencies of ACN in the South-west, APGA in the East, ANPP in the North, and CPC in the North.

“But because of our quest, desire to ensure unity of purpose, direction, focus and vision for every Nigerian, we came together to form APC, and abandoned all those premodial sentiments. I believe at this material time that people who should manage the affairs of APC are people who know where the party was coming from, where the party is going. I can assure you if I become the national chairman, I will ensure equity, fairness, justice and ensure that those of our supporters who joined the party; even if it is today, they are given a sense of belonging and participation,” Al-Makura maintained.

“I think we have gone beyond advice now. So, now we are calling out. I have been encountering with major stakeholders in the APC that we strongly believe that what we are asking for is fair. What we are asking for is not too much for the party to do. What we are asking for will actually keep the party together. So that is what we have been saying.

“I have gone far beyond just making a plea. I have gone to the stage of making consultations, speaking with the right people who are supposed to be part of this. Speaking with all the decision makers. Speaking with the highest authority of the party, especially speaking with my colleagues; the governors. I have been trying everything to ensure that we plead for this position to come to Nasarawa State,” he disclosed during the interactive session with the journalists.

Apart from agitations that the APC national chairmanship position should go to Nasarawa State, the Nasarawa citizens said the Congress for Progressives Change (CPC); one of the independent political parties that birthed the APC, was agitating that the position of the APC national chairman be zoned to the North-central before coming to Nasarawa State.

“I am going on the full swing. I don’t want to go half and stop. I am saying that I strongly believe it should come to North-central, and Nasarawa State; I always add that. I don’t want to stop at coming to North-central without mentioning Nasarawa State, because that is why I said I am going full swing. And we have justification for that. We are not just saying that for the sake of saying it.

“APC is actually a product of an alliance. An alliance between three former independent political parties. The ACN, ANPP and the CPC. The two former members of the alliance have all produced the national chairman of the party twice. But the only one that has not produced so far is the CPC. And if you are talking of the CPC, Nasarawa State is the only state with the CPC that went into the alliance. So, that is the justification that we have.

“But I don’t want to just stop at that. I keep saying let it come to Nasarawa State because I don’t want people to feel that the person I am looking for the position for, may be because of one reason or the other, is not the right person. So, let it come to Nasarawa State. Give us in Nasarawa State.”

The Nasarawa governor maintained that Nigerians have to be fair to CPC first, and then Nasarawa because it was the only state that joined the alliance. He added that when the chairmanship position comes to CPC, Nasarawa would look for it.

“But Right now, I think we have gone out full swing; we are calling out for people. We want people like Tanko Al-Makura to take it. And we are not hiding it,” he re-echoed.

The speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, expressed optimism that the APC will reclaim states of the federation it lost to the opposition only if Senator Al-Makura gets the national chairmanship position of the party.

The Nasarawa Assembly speaker expressed his optimism of APC reclaiming the lost states under the watch of Al-Makura in Lafia at an event endorsing senator for the national championship position of the APC which was organised by a political group, Progressives for Umar Tanko Al-Makura (PUTA). The Nasarawa speaker, who was represented at the endorsement ceremony by the Majority Leader of the Nasarawa House of Assembly, Umar Tanko Tunga, reminded everyone that Senator Al-Makura had won his governorship contest in 2011 on the platform of the CPC; a political party that at that time had no single councillorship seat in the country.

“It was CPC that produced Senator Al–Makura in 2011; a new party at that time that had no structure on ground. It was that Al-Makura’s CPC that merged with other political parties to form the APC that won the presidential election in 2015. If Al–Makura is given the opportunity as the national chairman of the APC, the APC will take over the whole country in future elections,” Speaker Abdullahi insisted.

Abdullahi, therefore, assured Senator Al-Makura of the Nasarawa lawmakers’ support at all times to enable him succeed in his political aspiration. He also urged Nigerians to support the aspiration of Al-Makura to lead the party and take it to greater heights, even as the speaker also called on Nigerians to continue to support the APC government at all levels to succeed.

To a political group, Progressives for Umar Tanko Al-Makura (PUTA), the declaration of Al-Makura to become the national championship seat of the APC was, no doubt, in tandem with the group’s clarion call and several other similar calls across the length and breadth of the country, directed at the senator.

The group said the declaration of Al-Makura, popularly referred to as “The Lafia Declaration”, like a thunderbolt, shook the political landscape of the country, particularly the North-central geopolitical zone and his home state of Nasarawa. PUTA continued that “consequently, critical stakeholders, opinion moulders, party leaders and indeed the entire APC family in the state received the declaration with untold excitement.

Addressing a mammoth crowd that thronged the Ta’al Conference Hotel, Lafia to witness the endorsement of Al-Makura for the national championship seat by critical stakeholders in the state, the convener of PUTA, Hon. Makpa Malla, said the PUTA strongly believes that the unanimous and very positive reception for Al-Makura by party stalwarts in the state was not unconnected with his (Al-Makura’s) love for the APC, “a party he midwifed, nurtured and strengthened, right from the days of the CPC, into the merger that culminated in the formation of the APC and afterwards as Executive Governor and Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic.”

Malla explained: “The purpose of this gathering of the cream of Nasarawa state’s politics and indeed the APC family, is to openly endorse whole heartedly, the candidature of Distinguish Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura, for the position of the national chairman of the rulling party in Nigeria, APC. This step we are taking today is aimed at leaving no one in doubt, anywhere in the country, that Nasarawa state is rock-solid and adamantly poised at standing by her very worthy son through this journey towards the Extra-ordinary national convention of the party as a national chairmanship contender.

“We believe that this step taken today would pave the way for the eventual emergence of an Al-Makura national chairmanship of our party. By this endorsement, the entire APC family in the state hereby express its utmost support and throws it’s full weight behind the aspiration of Distinguish Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura (Sarduanan Gwandara).”

The PUTA convener concluded that the world would clearly see that various party leaders and stalwarts ranging from representatives of the State Working Committee, Local Government Working Committees, ward officials from across the entire state, serving and former office holders, elder statesmen and sundry party leaders as well as supporters, were gathered at the Ta’al Conference Hotel, Lafia in full support of the endorsement.

CHAPTER SEVEN.

SENATOR AL-MAKURA: IS A GREAT LEADER, OPEN AND ACCESSIBLE. APC NEEDS HIM:

The clamour and support for His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura, the erstwhile Governor of Nasarawa State to emerge as the National Chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has thickened with various groups drumming support for his candidature.

Various groups are moving from one end to another, and taking steps to galvanize support for him. For many reasons, Al-Makura stands out as a formidable choice, capable of building on the successes of successive National Chairmen of the party.

Many individuals hold the opinion that he is the preferred choice for the position of APC National Chairman since no one from the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc has occupied the position out of all the blocs that merged to birth APC. This is the least considerations that qualifies Al-Makura for the position of APC National Chairman.

Giving his background and accomplishments, especially how he successfully managed the party in Nasarawa State while serving as leader of the party in the state, and the immense contributions he has made to its sustenance, Al-Makura no doubt possess the right character, stamina and political experience to lead the governing APC to greater successes. He personifies political leadership and is worthy to shoulder the burden of the party and its teeming supporters.

Al-Makura gave life to the defunct CPC in Nasarawa State when he joined the party in 2010 to pursue his aspiration of becoming the Governor of the state. Although the CPC at the time was new and could barely boast of political heavyweights to make a statement through its platform, Al-Makura deployed his weight and mobilized public support to the party to defeat an incumbent at the gubernatorial election in what is described as a revolution never seen and yet to be seen again in the state.

He has been a practicing politician for four (4) decades, occupying both party and governmental positions. He was the Youth Leader of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and later elected Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) in the old Plateau State in 1980 and 1990 respectively; elected into the Constituency Assembly between 1988 and 1989 to represent Lafia/Obi; and elected Governor of Nasarawa State in 2011.

While serving as Governor and leader of the party in Nasarawa State, Al-Makura paid keen attention to the party and ensured that it was on the same page with his government to deliver on its mandate. Due to his harmonious nature and disposition to team work, he alongside others successfully entered a merger with leaders of other opposition political parties to form the governing APC.

Even though the leaders of these political parties were distinct fellows, Al-Makura alongside others through tact strategies were able to secure the buy-in of others for the formation and consolidation of APC.

He is one of the few Governors that recorded no open confrontation or disagreement with the leadership of their parties in their respective states. While holding sway for 8 years, he managed divergent interests and contributed immensely to keeping the party united in the state.

This is attributed largely to his ability to absorb shock and his mastery in managing political conflict. It is no secret that he fell out with some of his allies, including those with whom he prosecuted his gubernatorial campaign under the platform of the defunct CPC and later, his deputy, however, being the distinct man with a large heart, he never engaged them on any issue publicly.

This typifies the peaceful and gracious character of Al-Makura. This further demonstrates his ability to manage all manner of people, and if given the mandate to lead the governing APC, he will do well and even more to keep the party united for a common goal in spite of divergent political interest from all manner of party men and women.

Al-Makura is also honest and stands firmly to accomplish his policy statements and take decisions to honour his commitment even under very difficult circumstances. He has demonstrated this as a Governor and in his personal dealings – leading to successes in many fronts. The governing party needs a leader now more than ever before that can be honest and just to all and stand to defend all.

Al-Makura is a mobilizer with the ability to mobilize people of all ages, creed, ethnicity and regions to support the APC to remain formidable and relevant for a prosperous Nigeria. He is a thorough progressive with the burning desire for sustainable development.

This will provide a suitable support to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu in 2027. He is skillful in the field of politics, he has deep understanding of words and actions, he is witty, detailed, meticulous, tact, and can maneuver circumstances to achieve desired result. He is goal oriented and full of energy to put the APC on a pedestal that cannot be matched by the opposition.

While Al-Makura is also vocal and loquacious, he has the ability to also manage his emotions and ensure that it does not becloud his judgment and decisions, especially when dealing with political interests. He is the man to bring sanity, party discipline and energy to reinvigorate the APC and ensure party supremacy.

One of the hallmarks of great leaders is openness and accessibility. When a leader is open and easily accessible, he will do good to his followers. Accessibility will always allow his followers to meet with the leaders to bare their minds on whatever agitation, aspirations challenges they have to the leader.

The leader must have a listening ear and listen to whatever the people have to say. Communication between the leader and his people is vital to building a flourishing relationship that enables the leader to make informed decisions concerning the welfare of his people.

I have known Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura since 2011, and I can boldly and unequivocally submit that he is one leader that is accessible and easy to reach. He also has a great listening ear.

He is incredibly simple and an embodiment of humbleness and unpretentiousness. He doesn’t show off or exhibit any airs or arrogance. He treats the low and the high with the same dignity and respect.

He is also generous and kind, compassionate and caring. In these trying times in the nation, especially our Great Party that has become fractious and fissiparous arising out of the unhealthy struggle for advantages and power, there is no gainsaying that

Senator Al-Makura is the only one among the pack of aspirants for the coveted position of National Chairman. He can assist Mr. President to bring forth a credible transition program both in the Party and country. He is not shambolic and not chameleonic or a wheeler and dealer. He is also a man of justice who is not clannish in any way or form. He managed Nassarawa, a miniature Nigeria with so much aplomb and skill which he will replicate in his management of All Progressives Congress.
