Metuh Joins APC, Says Tinubu Treated Him Better Than His Own Party

According to Ireporter Online, former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending his long-standing affiliation with the opposition party. Metuh, who had earlier stepped away from partisan politics about three years ago, said he returned to the political scene through the APC because its members supported him during his most difficult moments.

He announced his decision during a thanksgiving service held in Abuja on Sunday to mark his 60th birthday. The event was attended by several high-profile political figures, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma; former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim; former governors Okezie Ikpeazu, Sam Egwu, and Ikedi Ohakim; as well as Senators Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye.

Speaking to journalists after the service, Metuh said he was prepared to contribute meaningfully to national development under the APC-led administration. He dismissed fears that Nigeria was drifting toward a one-party system, insisting that the country still has numerous credible opposition figures capable of sustaining democratic balance.

While recounting his ordeal during past corruption trials, Metuh said the PDP abandoned him at a time he needed support. He revealed that, contrary to expectations, it was President Bola Tinubu—whom he used to criticise regularly during Tinubu’s years in the opposition—who reached out to him through the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, offering comfort and encouragement.

Metuh said this gesture convinced him that “it is not always where you sow that you reap,” stressing that he holds no resentment toward the PDP despite his decision to move on. He maintained that respected leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark remain strong enough to prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state

The former PDP spokesman disclosed that President Tinubu had invited him on multiple occasions over the years to join the ruling party, but he initially declined, especially after quitting politics in 2022. He explained that after Tinubu won the presidential election, he visited the president, who again encouraged him to join the APC. Metuh said he finally decided to return to politics to support national development and strengthen democratic engagement, noting that Nigeria needs vibrant opposition, free expression, and a balanced political environment.
