Local Government Financial Autonomy Set to Roll Out in January 2025

Local government autonomy has taken a significant step forward with the establishment of a team within the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) tasked with managing the direct distribution of funds to the nation’s 774 local governments. This initiative marks the beginning of financial independence for local governments, which is set to take effect in January 2025.
The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) will hold its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, where direct fund distributions to local governments will be a key topic. The initial allocations for most local government areas (LGAs) are expected to begin this month.
A committee member confirmed that the process for disbursement is on track, emphasizing the smoothness of the operation due to established structures within the Ministry and the AGF’s department. The Minister’s approval to begin disbursing funds is expected to face no major challenges.
