Atragic road accident in Lagos has claimed the life of a Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) officer and left a minibus driver injured.
The incident occurred at midnight of Monday at Ketu Bus Stop when a commercial minibus, popularly known as “korope,” collided with a parked LAWMA compactor truck.
Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the accident in a statement.
According to him, distress alerts were received at 23:59 hours, prompting the activation of the state’s emergency response from the Command and Control Centre in Alausa.
Upon arrival at the scene by 00:07 hours, LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team discovered that a commercial yellow minibus, with registration number AGL 97 YK, had crashed into a stationary LAWMA compactor truck.
The truck’s registration number remains unknown.
Preliminary investigations revealed that reckless driving by the minibus driver and the lack of a proper caution sign from the parked LAWMA truck contributed to the accident.
“In the process of the accident, the minibus struck a LAWMA official who was carrying out his lawful duties. Unfortunately, the LAWMA officer succumbed to his injuries before emergency responders arrived,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
He noted that remains of the deceased LAWMA official was handed over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for further processing.
Meanwhile, he said that the minibus driver sustained significant injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Agency’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit
