Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has renamed the Kano State Sports Institute and Kano State Sports Commission after the 22 Kano athletes who lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta in May, while the First Lady, Remi Tinubu has also donated the sum of N110m to the families of the deceased, The PUNCH reports.
The accident occurred on Saturday, May 30 near Gadar Yankifi along the Kaduna-Kano expressway, claiming the lives of 22 athletes while leaving others hospitalised.
During a ceremony held at the Government House in Kano, Governor Yusuf announced that the Kano State Sports Institute will now be known as the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has renamed the Kano State Sports Institute and Kano State Sports Commission after the 22 Kano athletes who lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta in May, while the First Lady, Remi Tinubu has also donated the sum of N110m to the families of the deceased, The PUNCH reports.

During a ceremony held at the Government House in Kano, Governor Yusuf announced that the Kano State Sports Institute will now be known as the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute.
Additionally, the Kano State Sports Commission will bear the name, Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission, in honour of the late sportsmen and women.
“These young heroes made Kano proud. They should be remembered forever. Their commitment and sacrifice to the state will not be forgotten,” the governor said.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by representatives of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs Remi Tinubu, who donated N110m to the bereaved families.
The wife of the President sent a delegation to condole with the governor and the people of Kano State as well as presented a donation to the government for onward distribution to the families.
The donation was presented by the leader of the delegation, Hajiya Laila Barau Jibrin, wife of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin.
Governor Yusuf appreciated the First Lady for the gesture.
“This is not the first time that Her Excellency the First Lady Remi Tinubu donated to Kano State.
Her Excellency the First Lady Remi Bola Ahmad Tinubu in the past donated N200m to 250 elderly women in Kano,” he said.
Governor Yusuf said a high-powered committee would be inaugurated for the onward distribution of all donations to the families of the victims.
