Kano APC Declares Local Government Elections Illegal Amid Ongoing Polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has branded the ongoing local government elections, organized by the state Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), as illegal.

During an interview on Saturday in Kano, APC chieftain Rabi’u Bichi asserted, “The party’s position is based on a court ruling by Justice Simon Amobede of the Federal High Court, Kano, which deemed the elections null and void. The judge ruled that KANSIEC displayed partisanship and bias favoring the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Since this judgment remains unappealed, the APC regards any election outcomes as illegal.”

Bichi also referenced a recent Federal High Court ruling that invalidated all NNPP chairmanship candidates for the elections, further solidifying the party’s claim of the elections’ illegitimacy. He urged party members to exercise restraint and await the legal actions being taken to contest the election process.

In response, KANSIEC Chairman Prof. Sani Malumfashi maintained that the commission was operating lawfully. “Every activity of the commission is procedural, and we are not partisan,” he stated, urging KANSIEC staff and ad hoc personnel to reject any attempts at bribery and ensure that underage individuals are not permitted to vote.

Malumfashi also reminded politicians that practices such as vote-buying, thuggery, and other forms of electoral violence are violations of the state’s electoral guidelines. He emphasized that true democrats should respect the Kano High Court ruling from Friday, which authorized the elections to move forward.

Earlier that day, the Kano State High Court No. 15 upheld KANSIEC’s authority to conduct the local government elections scheduled for October 26, 2024. Justice Sanusi Maaji noted that the applicant had successfully substantiated their case in court.
