Insecurity: SGF Akume unveils Tinubu’s security, peace agenda for Benue, North central

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has unveiled President Bola Tinubu’s comprehensive roadmap for restoring peace and security in Benue State and the wider North Central region.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and made available to Punch on Thursday, Akume explained that the Federal Government is rolling out a multi-layered security strategy aimed at ending the recurring violence that has plagued the region for years.

He emphasised that President Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue was not symbolic, but a deliberate move aligned with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda priorities the protection of lives above all else”, Akume stated, quoting the President’s position. “The President’s directive is unambiguous: security agencies must apprehend perpetrators and prevent recurrence. This is not just rhetoric, we are mobilising personnel, technology, and community intelligence.”

While acknowledging the immense pressure on Nigeria’s security forces, the SGF praised their commitment, adding that the Federal Government is addressing logistical gaps and encouraging better inter-agency collaboration.

“Our security forces are overstretched, yet their dedication is unwavering. We are augmenting their efforts with improved logistics and inter-agency coordination,” he said.

Senator Akume also stressed that achieving lasting peace will require strong cooperation between federal and state governments.

He called on the Benue State Government to take the lead in convening local stakeholders, including traditional rulers, opposition leaders, and civil society groups, to foster inclusive dialogue and community-based peacebuilding.

“While the FG leads security operations, the Benue State government must galvanize local leaders. The governor must convene stakeholders, traditional institutions, NGOs, and opposition figures to foster dialogue,” Akume stated.

On the humanitarian front, he expressed concern over the displacement of over 50,000 people, urging immediate intervention.

“We’re working with NEMA and NGOs to scale up aid. These people need food, shelter, and dignity,” he noted.

Beyond security measures, Akume outlined the government’s broader socio-economic plans to address the root causes of violence.

He revealed that agricultural initiatives and youth employment schemes are being fast-tracked to reduce poverty and prevent crime.

“Military action alone is not enough. We are fast-tracking agricultural projects and youth employment schemes to curb crime triggers,” he added.

“Peace is a process, but with sustained effort, Benue will reclaim its prosperity,” he assured.
