Immigration Service provides 4 major reasons for increasing passport fees

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has provided four major reasons for the increase in the fees of the country’s Standard Passport.

Recall that the Federal Government, through the service had on Thursday, August 22, 2024, announced an increase in the fees for Nigerian passports.

Spokesman of the NIS, DCI Kenneth Udo, revealed that starting from September 1, 2024, the fee for the 32-page passport booklet, valid for five years, will rise from N35,000 to N50,000 while the fee for the 64-page passport booklet, valid for ten years, will increase from N70,000 to N100,000.

In a photo post on its X handle on Saturday, the NIS highlighted four major reasons why the service increased the passport fees.

According to the post, the service increased the fees in order to improve the passport standard and quality, ensuring that the Nigerian passport continues to maintain the ICAO standard.

Another reason the fee was reviewed upward, the service said, was to address cost of materials and production in view of current realities.

“With the new fees, the NIS will create more passport offices and biometric centres, thereby increasing access to our facilities, decongesting already existing centres, and improving passport production turnaround time,” it noted.

“The recent increase in passport fees would also help the service actualise its drive for complete domestication of Nigerian passport booklets,” the post concluded.
