How to improve electricity generation’

In a statement signed by IISID, the organisation emphasised the need to invest in power infrastructure, renewable energy, and grid modernization.

It also advocated for the development of stable policies, provision of incentives for private sector investment, and measures to address corruption in the sector.

IISID noted that currently, Nigeria, with a population exceeding 210 million, required approximately 180,000 MW of electricity for a reliable power supply but was generating less than 6,000 MW.

“The power sector is dominated by gas-fired power plants, which face continuous supply issues and insufficient investment.

“It is worth noting that Nigeria has abundant renewable resources—solar, wind, and hydropower—that are currently underutilized. We strongly believe there is significant potential for these resources to enhance electricity generation and access, and immediate action is needed,” IISID stated.

As a group with expertise in power generation, sustainability, and distribution, IISID recommended the following measures for improvement: “Encourage collaboration between the government and private sector, including international organisations, allow multiple companies to distribute electricity to foster competition and improve efficiency, promote energy-efficient technologies and practices to reduce demand.

“Support off-grid solar systems and micro-hydro plants, launch public education campaigns on the benefits of renewable energy, and invest in advancing renewable energy technologies.

“Build capacity within institutions and human resources to manage the transition to renewable energy. Implement pilot projects to test and demonstrate the viability of renewable energy technologies and Introduce anti-corruption measures to address sector inefficiencies.

According to IISID, these recommendations are based on a comprehensive 41-page document resulting from years of rigorous research and analysis by researchers and practitioners.

The organisation stressed that without addressing key challenges such as outdated infrastructure, heavy reliance on gas and hydroelectric power, historical corruption, and inadequate maintenance and revenue collection, the government’s current efforts might be ineffective in the long term.

“While we are confident that the government is aware of some of these issues, we are uncertain if all concerns are fully recognised,” IISID noted.
