Governor Urges FG To Restrict Social Media, Cites Misinformation Concerns

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has called on the federal government to impose restrictions on social media platforms, claiming they are being used to spread misinformation capable of destabilising the country.

Mr Nwifuru made the call on Friday while addressing journalists in Abakaliki, where he expressed concern over what he described as “unchecked abuse of online platforms.”

Social media has become a tool for spreading lies and inciting the public. The federal government must look into ways of regulating or restricting it to safeguard national unity,” the governor said.

He argued that while social media remains a useful communication tool, its misuse poses a grave threat to peace and security.

Critics, however, warn that such restrictions could be used by politicians to stifle free expression and silence dissenting voices, noting that Nigeria has a long history of clampdowns on media freedoms.

Rights groups have consistently opposed moves to regulate social media, insisting that the government should instead focus on promoting media literacy and tackling insecurity.
