Ghana Closes All Land Borders Ahead Of December 7 General Elections

The Ministry stated that the decision is a crucial step to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process.

The Ministry of the Interior of Ghana has announced the immediate closure of all land borders to maintain the integrity of the upcoming December 7 General Elections.

The temporary measure, which began immediately after the announcement, will remain in effect until 6pm on Sunday, 8th December 2024.

The Ministry stated that the decision is a crucial step to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process.

In a press statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey (MP) on Friday, the Ministry urged compliance from the public.

“The Ministry urges all citizens, and travellers to and from Ghana, to cooperate with State Security Agencies enforcing this directive.”

The directive applies to all individuals and organisations, with security agencies stationed at the borders to enforce the closure effectively.

The Ministry’s decision underscores the importance of maintaining the credibility of the elections as Ghanaians prepare to cast their votes.

The statement added, “The Ministry of the Interior has ordered the temporary closure of all land borders as part of measures to ensure the integrity of the December 7 General Elections.

“This temporary closure is with immediate effect and ends at 6:00pm on Sunday, 8th December 2024.

“The Ministry urges all citizens, and travellers to and from Ghana, to cooperate with the state security agencies enforcing this directive.”
