FG Issues Five-Day Heavy Downpour, Flood Alert in 14 States

The Federal Government has warned that 14 states across Nigeria face the risk of flooding as heavy rainfall is expected between September 4 and September 8, 2025.

The alert was issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of the Environment, in a statement signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.

Authorities cautioned that 43 locations nationwide could experience significant flooding during the period, a situation made more severe by climate change and inadequate drainage infrastructure.

The identified states and locations include:

Ebonyi: Afikpo

Cross River: Edor, Ikom, Itigidi, Akpap

Kano: Gwarzo, Karaye

Zamfara: Anka, Gummi, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi, Bukkuyum

Taraba: Dampar, Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gembu, Gun Gun Bodel, Kambari, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Bandawa, Ngaruwa

Abia: Eziama, Umuahia

Meanwhile, in Lagos, the State Government has sounded the alarm over an impending environmental and social crisis in the Lagos Lagoon. Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Alebiosu, warned at a press briefing in Ikeja that the Lagoon faces a looming collapse unless urgent interventions are made.

The warning comes ahead of Lagos’ maiden waterfront summit scheduled for September 11, themed “Pressure on the Lagoon: The Lagos Experience”. The event will gather over 500 experts to deliberate on coastal erosion and sustainable solutions. Alebiosu revealed that erosion had already wiped out Idotun Village in Ibeju-Lekki, displacing families and destroying livelihoods—a crisis also mirrored in parts of Ghana.

In a related development, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, signed an agreement with China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, in Abuja, formalizing financial support to aid communities affected by flooding.

Bagudu described the intervention as timely, assuring that the grant would be managed transparently through a joint monitoring and evaluation mechanism with the Chinese Embassy.

Ambassador Dunhai expressed China’s solidarity, noting that both nations have recently endured severe flooding and reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to partnership in disaster response and recovery.
