FCT primary teachers to call off strike following Wike’s intervention
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) primary school teachers are set to call off their three-month strike following the intervention of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. After extensive meetings involving the Minister, Area Council Chairmen, and stakeholders, an agreement was reached to address the teachers’ grievances.
The Area Council Chairmen committed to forfeiting 10% of their internally generated revenue over the next six months to pay about 70% of the outstanding minimum wage arrears owed to the teachers.
Additionally, a special committee comprising representatives from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCTA, Area Councils, and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) was formed to resolve remaining issues. Minister Wike emphasized that the responsibility for teachers’ salaries lies with the Area Council Chairmen, not the FCT Administration, and called for legislative oversight to ensure compliance.
The NUT has expressed appreciation for the intervention and will soon announce the suspension of the strike.
