Fayose declares PDP d£ad, predicts more govs defections

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has exonerated President Bola Tinubu from the mounting crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said the party’s troubles are entirely self-inflicted.

Fayose, who described the PDP as “dead,” said he would not be part of any effort to revive it, even as he hinted that more defections from the opposition party are imminent.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme on Wednesday, Fayose dismissed claims that President Tinubu had been coercing opposition governors to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

According to him, the recent exit of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah from the PDP was not influenced by the presidency but driven by the governors’ personal political ambitions.

“President Tinubu should not be blamed for PDP’s problems. The PDP is sick and remains perpetually sick without a cure in view.

“Those who killed the party know themselves. There is a difference between a former governor and a sitting governor,” Fayose said.

The former governor, who remains a card-carrying member of the PDP, revealed that three more governors are preparing to abandon the party, leaving it with just five.

He warned that even among those who remain, internal divisions could soon further weaken the once-dominant political force.

“Let me tell you, there are three more governors that will leave soon.

“There will be five remaining. The five remaining, one of them will struggle to catch the ticket, and they all know that the ticket is an ordinary tissue paper,” he stated.

Fayose blamed the party’s decline on power struggles among its current leaders, accusing them of prioritizing personal control over the party’s unity and survival.

“They are largely killing the party because they want to control it. This is what happened in 2023,” he added.

Despite being one of the PDP’s longstanding members, Fayose made it clear that he holds no obligation to help rescue the embattled opposition, saying the rot within the party predates recent defections.

The former governor’s remarks come amid growing speculation of an exodus from the PDP, with the party struggling to redefine its identity following its defeat in the 2023 general elections.
