Ekiti Judge sued for alleged adultery, faces ₦200m lawsuit

A serving Judge of the Ekiti State High Court, Justice Oluwasegun Isaac Ogunyemi, has been accused of allegedly engaging in an adulterous affair that reportedly wrecked a marriage, sparking a ₦200 million legal battle.

The allegation was brought before the Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti by a university don, Professor Babalola Abegunde, who alleged that the judicial officer was responsible for the collapse of his marriage to his wife, Oluwatoyin Olayemi Abegunde (née Olorunshola), a practising lawyer.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the inaugural hearing of his suit, Prof. Abegunde disclosed that he had approached the court seeking the dissolution of the marriage on grounds of adultery, non-consummation, and intolerable behaviour by his wife.

He further demanded full custody of their last child and also sought damages amounting to ₦200 million against Justice Ogunyemi, whom he accused of having an illicit affair with his wife—an act he claimed rendered the union unbearable.

Presiding over the case, Justice Niyi Familoni urged the parties to ensure they regularise their processes before the court. The judge, however, gave no ruling on the substantive issues but adjourned proceedings.

Prof. Abegunde maintained his faith in the court’s ability to deliver justice and called for fairness and impartiality in handling the sensitive matter involving a high-ranking judicial officer.

The matter has been adjourned till Friday, October 24, 2025, for further hearing.
