Ekiti governor Oyebanji rolls on floor during church thanksgiving service
The governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, was seen rolling on the floor during a thanksgiving service in a church in the state.
In a now-viral video, the governor was seen rolling back and forth on the floor in a brown short-leaved suit and trousers as other worshippers sang praise songs.
This comes days after his affirmation as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the 2026 governorship election
He was endorsed by 885 delegates from all 16 local government areas at the special nomination congress held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, on October 27.
The exercise was supervised by a 10-member committee led by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, with Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo as deputy chairman.
Oyebanji’s candidacy was ratified following the withdrawal of the only other cleared aspirant, Mrs Atinuke Omolayo.
The motion for ratification was moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Ekiti Assembly Speaker Adeoye Stephen.
Oyebanji, first sworn in on October 16, 2022, will seek re-election in the July 20, 2026, poll.
Public displays of emotional thanksgiving by Nigerian governors are not uncommon. In 2024, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke broke down in tears and rolled on the floor during an anniversary event in Osogbo.
Similarly, in 2016, then Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom knelt in public prayer for God’s forgiveness over the state’s challenges.
