Edo PDP: Things fall apart

The Edo State Peoples Democratic Party seems to be on a self-destruct mission as opposition gathers within the party against Governor Godwin Obaseki and the candidate of the party for the September 21 governorship election, Asue Ighodalo

Speaking earlier, the Edo South senatorial district chairman of the PDP, Ogieva-Okunbor, said that the leaders/stakeholders meeting was called for the old PDP members to express their minds and stand together in unity.

He added, “One sure thing is that we will never help an ingrate again. Whatever efforts we are going to put in must be rewarded.”

However a founding member of the PDP in the state, Dickson Imasogie, said that it was wrong for Orbih and his group to work against the party because of differences they had with the Obaseki. The PDP leader, who said he is also a founding member of the Legacy group, noted that the party would win the election despite the gang-up.

He stated that the party was already gaining more members from the legacy group and other parties to boost its ranks, assuring that Ighodalo would emerge as the winner of the election.

“It is wrong for them to be working against the party at this point. They said the governor made some promises to them and they were even hoping that they would get the deputy governor’s slot. But would the governor have given them the slot the way they have conducted themselves so far?

“He will not because he will be afraid of being betrayed. What they are doing is throwing the baby with the bath water which will be counter-productive in this situation. What we should be doing as a party now, is to unite to win the election.-

“But we will emerge victorious without Orbih and his group. Orbih joined the party in 2004 and he cannot be more PDP than I am. We are going to get the numbers and win the election,” he noted.

With the APC waiting in the wings, the PDP will do well to put its house in order to avoid a defeat at the governorship poll on September 21, 2024.
