Edo Muslims demand key positions in Okpebholo govt
.A religious group, Edo Muslim for Equity and Good Governance, has called for increased Muslim representation in the newly elected Edo State government.
The call was contained in a statement released by Shiekh Sirajudeen Muhammad, the group’s general coordinator. In it, he stressed the considerable Muslim community in the state.
The statement reads in part, “The group emphasized that it is time for Muslims, who represent 40 per cent population of the state to be recognized for their active participation and contributions during the last election cycle.
Muhammad noted that Muslims in Edo State played a significant role in ensuring the victory of the All Progressives Congress in the recent election, maintaining that while both the positions of governor and deputy governor have already been assigned to Christian candidates, it is now crucial to honour promises of inclusivity made by the governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo.
He averred that EMEGG is advocating for Muslims to be appointed to key positions, specifically, the Secretary to the State Government and the Chief of Staff, arguing that these positions are critical to ensuring a balanced and inclusive government that reflects the diverse religious makeup of Edo State.
He enthused, “Edo Muslims have qualified, experienced, dedicated, committed, and loyal APC faithful who have made significant contributions to the party’s success.”
The group posited that by appointing Muslims to these roles, the incoming Edo State government can foster unity, build trust within the Muslim community, and enhance the state’s governance.
The group further assured of its continued support for the governor-elect and a commitment to the development of a better Edo State.
This call for representation underscores a broader national conversation about the inclusion of religious and ethnic minorities in Nigeria’s political processes.
The group’s demands will likely fuel discussions about equitable power-sharing as the new Edo administration prepares to take office.
