Akure Community Demands Federal Action Over “Devastating” Blasting by Mining Firm
Residents of the Uluyagbo community in Akure, Ondo State, have issued an urgent public appeal to the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, demanding intervention against a mining company whose operations are allegedly destroying their homes and threatening their health.
In an open letter dated November 3, 2025, the community renewed its petition against Dortmund and Company Limited, a firm conducting blasting and quarrying operations on Uluyagbo community, Igbatoro road.
The letter, signed by Barr. Omobamibo O.O on behalf of the residents, accuses the company of “indiscriminate blasting” that has led to devastating consequences.
“Homes, and essential community infrastructure have been structurally damaged or entirely destroyed,” the petition states. Residents also claim they are “chronically exposed to intense hazardous vibrations, intolerable noise pollution, and potential long-term health hazards” from quarrying dust.
The community’s appeal highlights a critical gap in government response. While the Ondo State Government is praised for its “commendable, prompt efforts” to investigate the situation, particularly after a destructive blast in August, the residents note with “deep concern” the lack of federal action.
The state’s Commissioner for Power and Mineral Resources reportedly investigated the community’s claims, which the residents say “underscores the urgency and tangible evidence” supporting their case.
However, the community emphasizes that the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development “holds the ultimate authority and responsibility to regulate these activities” and has yet to take “concrete, mitigating action.”
The Uluyagbo community is urging the federal ministry to immediately launch its own “thorough, independent investigation as done by the federal ministry of environment”, into the damage and the company’s adherence to safety standards.
They are demanding strict enforcement of mining regulations, including a “cease-and-desist order” if Dortmund and Company Limited is found to be non-compliant.
“The safety and survival of the Uluyagbo community hang in the balance,” the letter concludes, pleading for an immediate update and a firm timeline for action.
