Magistrate Court Fines Woman ₦450,000 Over Transport Fare Fraud
We cannot independently verify this report, but according to information available, a Magistrate Court in Lagos has fined a young woman, identified as Jennifer, the sum of ₦450,000 for allegedly obtaining money under false pretenses.
Court records indicate that Jennifer received ₦30,000 from a man named Emmanuel, who claimed he sent her the money as transport fare in anticipation of her visiting him. However, she reportedly failed to show up and later cut off communication.
Emmanuel petitioned the court, describing the incident as “fraudulent extortion.” After reviewing the case, the court ruled that Jennifer’s conduct amounted to deception and financial exploitation, and ordered her to pay damages far exceeding the original transport fare.
The presiding Magistrate noted that cases of so-called “transport fare fraud” are on the rise and amount to cyber-enabled extortion. The judgment, though unusual, was delivered as a deterrent to others who might attempt similar acts.
Jennifer must now pay the ₦450,000 fine or face further legal consequences.
