Oyo secures conviction of top official in civil service job scam
In a landmark victory for justice, transparency, and good governance, the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) has secured the conviction of a senior civil servant implicated in a recruitment scam that defrauded unsuspecting job seekers.
Mr. Wahab Nasiru Olabanji, a former Chief Executive Officer (Accounts) at the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, was found guilty on 30 counts, including official corruption, obtaining money under false pretences, and fraudulent conversion.
The court, after a rigorous 17-month trial, delivered judgment on Friday, August 1, 2025, sentencing Olabanji to six months’ imprisonment on each count, with an option of a ₦50,000 fine per charge.
Beyond the sentencing, the court also ordered that all funds fraudulently obtained from victims be repaid within three months. The restitution directive is aimed at restoring justice and compensating those who were deceived during the scam.
Chairperson of OYACA, Hon. Justice Eni Esan (rtd), hailed the judgment as a milestone in the state’s fight against public sector corruption.
She stated that the agency remains committed to a zero-tolerance policy on corruption and will continue to pursue justice without fear or favour.
“This conviction sends a strong message that the era of impunity is over in Oyo State. Public servants must now understand that misconduct and unethical behaviour will be met with the full weight of the law,” Justice Esan said.
She also encouraged members of the public to support the anti-graft war by reporting cases of corruption and resisting all forms of extortion or administrative malpractice.
The successful prosecution marks a significant stride in OYACA’s mandate to clean up the civil service, safeguard citizens from exploitation, and strengthen public trust in government institutions.
