NEMA gets N10bn funding for 2025 flood response

The National Emergency Management Agency has received an allocation of N10bn from the National Economic Council to strengthen its preparedness and response efforts ahead of the 2025 flood season.
The funding is aimed at supporting nationwide flood mitigation and response efforts.
The approval was made during the NEC meeting held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting, chaired by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, also featured a presentation by NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, on the current status of floods across the country and the agency’s response strategies.
Mrs. Umar also provided a detailed briefing on NEMA’s flood preparedness strategy, ongoing risk assessments, early warning dissemination, and coordinated response mechanisms being implemented in anticipation of the 2025 flood season.
The press statement announcing the fund release was signed on Friday by the Head of Press Unit at NEMA, Manzo Ezekiel.
Aside from NEMA, the NEC also approved the disbursement of N3bn each to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as N1.5bn each to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation to boost flood prevention and emergency response efforts.
The statement noted, “Following her presentation and subsequent deliberations on the urgent need for proactive measures, the NEC approved the release of intervention funds to support nationwide flood mitigation and response efforts.
“The approved disbursements are as follows: N3bn each to the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory; N1.5bn to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning; N1.5bn to the Federal Ministry of Environment; N1.5bn to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation; and N10bn to the National Emergency Management Agency.”
“Mrs. Zubaida Umar expressed profound appreciation to the Vice President and members of the Council for the timely and strategic intervention. She reaffirmed NEMA’s unwavering commitment to the efficient, transparent, and accountable utilization of the allocated funds in line with the agency’s mandate to safeguard lives and livelihoods during emergencies.”
Umar further assured that NEMA would continue to work closely with state governments, relevant ministries, agencies, and partners to ensure a well-coordinated, timely, and people-centered flood response across the nation.
