NURSES’ STRIKE: EXERCISE PATIENCE WITH THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL WELFARE — SANUSI BABAN TAKKO URGES
Alhaji Sanusi Baban Takko, Chairman of the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority (UBRBDA), overseeing development efforts across Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba States, has called on Nigerian nurses to exercise restraint and show greater patience with the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, CON, as they continue to push for improved welfare and working conditions.
He cautioned that embarking on a nationwide strike at this time could have devastating consequences for millions of patients and the broader healthcare system. He stressed that the potential disruption would further strain an already pressured sector and risk the lives of vulnerable Nigerians who depend on public healthcare services.
Alhaji Sanusi acknowledged the significant reforms and measurable progress being recorded in the health sector under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Minister Pate. In just two years, the administration has launched transformative policies aimed at revitalizing healthcare delivery and improving the well-being of healthcare workers, including nurses.
He urged the leadership of Nigerian nurses to remain committed to dialogue and non-disruptive channels of engagement, emphasizing the importance of unity, patience, and mutual understanding in resolving the current impasse. He highlighted the broader national interest and encouraged all involved to seek solutions that protect lives and preserve the integrity of the health sector.
Drawing from his close knowledge of Professor Ali Pate’s record of service and leadership qualities, Alhaji Sanusi described the Minister as a competent, visionary, and selfless public servant whose reforms are already yielding results. He appealed to the nurses to allow more time for ongoing processes to take effect, assuring them that their concerns are being addressed.
Alhaji Sanusi further commended President Tinubu’s choice in appointing Professor Pate, noting that the Minister’s international experience and passion for healthcare transformation have brought renewed momentum to national health programs and policies.
He reaffirmed his belief that, with continued support from all stakeholders, the health sector will witness even greater achievements in the near future. He cited recent improvements in welfare packages for nurses and other healthcare professionals as a sign of the government’s responsiveness and goodwill.
