Today, the football world mourns the passing of a true Nigerian icon, Peter Rufai, one of the greatest goalkeepers Africa has ever produced. Known affectionately as “Dodo Mayana” Rufai was more than just a shot-stopper—he was a leader, a mentor, and a symbol of resilience for Nigerian football.

Born on August 24, 1963, Rufai rose from humble beginnings to become a household name in Nigerian and international football. His agility, commanding presence, and sharp reflexes made him a formidable force in goal, earning him respect across the globe. He was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998), where his heroics between the sticks inspired a generation.

Rufai was instrumental in Nigeria’s golden era, helping the Super Eagles clinch the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and making history as the first African team to reach the Round of 16 at the World Cup that same year. His club career was equally illustrious, with successful stints in Europe, including Portugal, Belgium, and the Netherlands, where he showcased his world-class talent.

Beyond his saves and trophies, Rufai was a gentleman of the game—humble, disciplined, and deeply passionate about nurturing young talents. Even after retirement, he remained a vocal advocate for Nigerian football, offering guidance and wisdom to aspiring goalkeepers.

As we bid farewell to this legendary figure, we remember Peter Rufai not just for his incredible saves, but for his unwavering dedication to the sport and his nation. His legacy will live on in the hearts of football fans, the goalkeepers he inspired, and the history books that will forever celebrate his greatness.

Rest in peace, Dodo Mayana. You were more than a goalkeeper—you were a hero.

🇳🇬⚽ Forever in our memories.
