UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves Under Investigation Over Possible Breach Of Rules

The probe, opened on April 29, concerns the “registration of interest,” which refers to lawmakers’ obligation to declare any financial benefits or gifts they receive that could influence their duties, Reuters reports.

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves is currently under investigation by Parliament’s standards commissioner for a potential breach of financial disclosure rules, according to the UK Parliament.

The probe, opened on April 29, concerns the “registration of interest,” which refers to lawmakers’ obligation to declare any financial benefits or gifts they receive that could influence their duties, Reuters reports.

Under UK parliamentary rules, Members of Parliament must register such interests within 28 days to maintain transparency. Failure to do so can lead to formal investigations. While no specific allegations have been detailed, this is standard practice during ongoing inquiries.

The controversy reportedly centres around four tickets Reeves received from the National Theatre on December 27, which were not entered into the parliamentary register until March 27—outside the required timeframe. However, the exact tickets had been disclosed earlier in January under a separate ministerial register published by the UK government.

A spokesperson for Reeves stated, “The Chancellor’s interests are fully declared and up to date.”

Despite this, the investigation continues as part of broader efforts to uphold the integrity of parliamentary standards.

This follows a renewed push for transparency in British politics. In November, Prime Minister Keir Starmer introduced a stricter ministerial code of conduct after a wave of controversies involving MPs accepting gifts, including Taylor Swift concert tickets and designer items.
