Ganduje receives ex-Kano SSG Bichi, Sumaila into APC, says 2027 is a done deal
Abdullahi Ganduje, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday, received top political figures from Kano state who defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Kawu Sumaila, senator representing Kano south, who confirmed his defection in a Facebook post on Wednesday, led the group.
Ganduje said the APC’s victory in the 2027 general election is certain.
“I don’t want to reveal our secret, but what I’m telling you is that APC 2027 is a done deal,” he said.
Others who joined the APC alongside Sumaila include Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, a former speaker of the Kano state house of assembly; Abdullahi Sani Rogo, an ex-lawmaker; Zubairu Hamza Massu; Diggol and Abbas Sani, both former commissioners; and Baffa Bichi, former secretary to the state government (SSG).
Sumaila said his departure from the NNPP would not affect his working relationship with the state government.
The lawmaker said his decision was driven by the need to advance development in his constituency.
“One of the reasons for leaving was related to the area we come from—how we can provide something truly beneficial for our people,” he said.
“Politics is about negotiations, discussions, and seeking the best outcomes for the community.”
Sumaila assured his constituents that ongoing development initiatives would continue.
He said his new political affiliation would boost economic opportunities in the region.
“I have no regrets about leaving NNPP. Everyone is focused on finding the best solutions for their people, and that is what matters most,” he said.
On Wednesday, Ajibola Basiru, national secretary of the APC, likened the ruling party to Jehovah’s Witnesses — a Christian group famed for its door-to-door evangelism.
He said one of the key policies under the leadership of Ganduje is to build a functional and efficient party structure at every level in the country.
