Lagos committed to LG autonomy – Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the 2025 council elections will affirm Lagos’ commitment to local government autonomy.

He said this as he outlined significant strides in the state’s development during the 2025 Annual Thanksgiving Service held at Tafawa Balewa Square on Sunday.

With the theme ‘Harvest of Thanksgiving,’ the event marked a moment of reflection and optimism as the congregation gave thanks for the past year and looked ahead to the future.

In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the trials and triumphs of the year 2024, emphasising that faith and collective effort had yielded positive outcomes.

“Also, this year 2025, our local government elections will further strengthen the delivery of good governance at the grassroots, and affirm our commitment to ensuring the autonomy of local government in Nigeria, a core plank of the President’s vision for a truly federal Nigeria,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu praised the economic reforms spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu, despite the short-term challenges they presented.

He noted that the sacrifices made by citizens were beginning to show promising results, with increasing public revenues, macroeconomic stability, and significant investments across various sectors.

Looking ahead, Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to key projects like the new international airport, expansion of the municipal rail system, and implementation of the Lagos State Electricity Law of 2024.

“This new year, in addition to everything else we are already doing in the area of access to quality education and healthcare, security, environmental protection, wealth creation, social investment, women and youth development, and others, we will vigorously push ahead with efforts to mobilise the needed financing for ambitious projects like the new International Airport, the expansion of our municipal rail system, and construction of our food logistics hub.

“We will also scale up our work on the implementation of the new Lagos State Electricity Law of 2024, which is all about unbundling the electricity value chain and developing a sustainable electricity market for Lagos State which will deliver reliable and affordable power to our homes, offices, and industries,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor extended his appreciation to President Tinubu for the federal support on critical projects, and thanked state officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the people of Lagos for their contributions to the state’s progress.
