18-Year-Old Suspect Accused Of Killing Niger State Permanent Secretary Dies In Police Custody

Abdulhakeem died on Thursday, although the cause of his death remains unknown.

Fatiyah Abdulhakeem, the 18-year-old principal suspect accused of murdering retired Permanent Secretary Adamu Jagaba in Niger State, has died while in police custody.

Abdulhakeem died on Thursday, although the cause of his death remains unknown.

He had been paraded recently by the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Ebenezer Danmama, for his alleged involvement in Jagaba’s murder.

The late Permanent Secretary was reportedly stabbed to death at his block industry near the PDP Secretariat in Minna.

During the police parade, Abdulhakeem claimed, “I was contracted by some workers of the deceased to kill him.”

Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the death, stating, “On 19/12/2024 at about 5pm, the suspect, Fatiyah Abdulhakeem, complained of severe stomach pains and cough.”

He was taken to the general hospital, Minna for medical attention but unfortunately, he later died while receiving treatment.

“The corpse was deposited at the hospital morgue while awaiting postmortem result for further action.”

SaharaReporters earlier reported that in a video clip, Abdulhakeem admitted to plotting and carrying out the crime with the help of Jagaba’s employees.

My name is Fatiyah Abdulhakeem from Tayi Village, resident of Bosso local government area of Niger state,” Abdulhakeem said.

He went on to explain how Jagaba’s workers, Abata Love and Baba Soyaya, who worked at his block industry, provided crucial information about the victim’s routine.

“They said we should come by 10:30 am because their boss usually comes to work by that time,” he said.

Abdulhakeem revealed that his gang, consisting of Ibro, Abbas, Usama, and Abdulrahman, arrived at Jagaba’s premises and waited while he (Abdulhakeem) approached the victim under the pretense of helping with some work.

“I asked them to hide behind a container. I went to the man to help him carry his food flasks from his car, and after he was done supervising his workers, we sat and watched video clips from his phone,” he recalled.

The confession continued with Abdulhakeem describing how Jagaba had started feeling unwell before the fatal stabbing.

“He was thinking of how to contact me to come and help him paint his car but I was there already. After complaining to me that he was not feeling too well, we had a discussion that lasted till around 1:30 pm,” he said.

Abdulhakeem then explained the moment he struck Jagaba.

“When he turned to sneeze, that was when I stabbed him in the neck with a knife and hit his head with a stapler as I took his car key and zoomed off with his car,” he said.

Despite Jagaba pleading for his life, Abdulhakeem continued with the attack.

Abdulhakeem said he initially planned to sell the stolen car, a Toyota Camry, for N4 million.

He expressed his regret, stating, “I had never killed in my life. My gang and I only stab people to collect their phones and other valuables.”

Abdulhakeem, who was arrested after a swift police investigation, said he was shocked by the authorities’ ability to trace and apprehend him.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that Jagaba was attacked and stabbed to death on December 7, 2024, at his block industry along the Eastern Bypass in Minna.

The police confirmed Jagaba’s death after he was rushed to the hospital and disclosed that Abdulhakeem had fled the scene with the victim’s vehicle.

The Niger State Police Command has assured the public that further investigation is ongoing, with efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the murder. Abdulhakeem will be charged once the investigation is completed, the police said.
