President Sacks 7 Ministers, 270 Appointees

President of The Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, has sacked seven state ministers, 43 deputy ministers, and 178 political directors in a move to reduce government spending.

This decision is part of efforts to manage the nation’s economic challenges as it faces a growing debt crisis.

Muizzu, who came to power last year, aims to restructure and streamline government operations.

The Maldives, known for its luxury resorts, has seen its economy struggle under a $3.37 billion foreign debt burden, equivalent to about 45 percent of its GDP.

In September, the government dismissed the idea of seeking an International Monetary Fund bailout, describing its financial challenges as temporary.

The Maldives has become a focal point for China and India, its two largest creditors.

China, which accounts for about 20 percent of the external debt, pledged additional funding following Muizzu’s election victory last year.
