The recent surge in large-scale disasters across the country, especially the devastating floods and the rising numbers of internally displaced persons due to insecurity, underscores the critical importance of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The ministry was established with the noble intention of addressing the needs of the most disadvantaged in our society. Only God knows the impact Dr. Betta Edu could have had by now, offering intervention to flood victims across the country, had she been given the chance to continue in her role.

Unfortunately, some mischief-makers, who seem indifferent to the plight of the vulnerable, are callings for the ministry to be scrapped, citing instances of high-scale corruption that have recently plagued it. This led to the suspension of Dr. Betta Edu. However, we must remember that addressing corruption requires targeted action, not the dismantling of a ministry meant to serve millions in need. You cannot throw the baby out with the bathwater.

President Tinubu’s decision to set up a panel to investigate the alleged mismanagement within the ministry is a wise and rational approach. The panel’s findings will help identify those responsible for any wrongdoing, and appropriate sanctions should be imposed on the culprits. The very reason why anti-corruption agencies exist is to root out corruption in government ministries, departments, and agencies, ensuring that these institutions can continue serving the people effectively.

We urge the federal government to release the findings of the investigation panel to the public. Nigerians deserve to know who is responsible for the mismanagement of the ministry funds, and those found innocent should be reinstated to their rightful positions. We cannot allow the enemies of progress to prevail by denying Dr. Betta Edu the opportunity to render her selfless service to the people of this country.

In conclusion, we appeal to His Excellency to reconsider the plan to scrap this vital ministry. The vulnerable depend on it, and with proper management and leadership, it can continue to fulfill its purpose.
