House Of Reps Orders Probe Into Abuja Earth Tremor Incident

The motion for this intervention was moved by the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, who called for an urgent investigation into the recent earth tremors experienced in the Federal Capital Territory.

The House of Representatives has expressed worry over earth tremors experienced in the Mpape area of the nation’s capital, Abuja.

The lawmakers also directed the National Emergency Management Agency to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the potential hazards of the incident.

The motion for this intervention was moved by the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, who called for an urgent investigation into the recent earth tremors experienced in the Federal Capital Territory.

Chinda, while leading the debate, expressed worry over media reports and complaints from residents in various districts, including Mpape of tremors and vibrations over the past few months.

He said, “The House is deeply concerned about the possible damage to critical infrastructure, including office buildings, roads, and essential public facilities.

“If these tremors escalate, there is a real risk of loss of life, displacement of residents, and severe economic losses.”

The House tasked its Committees on the Federal Capital Territory, Environment, and Emergency Disaster Preparedness to investigate the cause of the tremors and propose necessary legislative actions.

The tremor in Mpape has caused apprehension with residents expressing worry over the development.

Following the earlier tremor, NEMA had suspended all mining activities in the community.

A similar incident happened in 2018, with the government playing down the impact, before the most recent incident a few weeks ago.
