During an inter-ministerial press briefing organized by the Ministry of Communications and Strategy, the Kwara State Commissioner for Works and Transport, AbdulQwawiy Olododo, revealed that the state witnessed multiple fire incidents in 2023, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives.

Additionally, the Commissioner for Social Development, Afolashade Opeyemi, expressed concern over the discovery of dangerous arms such as guns, daggers, charms, and other weapons among beggars in the state.

Olododo further highlighted that the state Fire Service successfully preserved property valued at N18 billion during the same period.

He said, “The State Fire Service during the time under review received 190 emergency calls from citizens. The State Fire Service saved property worth over N18 billion from fire incidents in the past year, while the estimated value of property lost during this period amounted to N629 million.

“Additionally, at least 10 lives were lost to fire disasters during the year, though many fire victims were rescued alive.”

He credited the swift response of Fire Service personnel and the acquisition of modern firefighting equipment and gear by the state government for saving numerous lives.

Addressing road infrastructure, Olododo disclosed the completion of 75 road projects, comprising rehabilitation, reconstruction, and interlocking, leading to enhanced travel efficiency. Additionally, ongoing efforts encompass 80 more road projects spread across the state’s 16 local government areas, aimed at further improving infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Opeyemi reported the state government’s crackdown on suspected arm depots among beggars in Ilorin, resulting in the removal of 158 individuals believed to be associated with criminal activities.

Expressing concern, she highlighted the discovery of weapons such as guns, daggers, and charms among these beggars, questioning their purported status. Opeyemi emphasised that many of these beggars, primarily from Bauchi, Kano, and other northern states, pose a significant social threat in areas like Ilorin.

Furthermore, she noted the rehabilitation and discharge of five mentally challenged individuals in Ilorin, following treatment and certification of their mental stability. These individuals were subsequently repatriated to their respective states.

Despite government efforts to engage with these marginalized groups, Opeyemi lamented their persistent non-compliance, citing their stubbornness as a challenge.
