Tinubu on top of Nigeria-US diplomatic tension – FG
The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to remain calm amid the ongoing diplomatic tension between Nigeria and the United States stemming from recent comments by President Donald Trump.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, in Dutse on Monday.
According to a statement by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, Idris reassured the nation.
President Bola Tinubu has all it takes to secure Nigeria from destabilising elements, as well as mend any cracks in our nation’s relationship with our international friends and partners; as such, Nigerians should please remain calm,” Idris said.
According to the statement, the minister was in Jigawa State to participate in the North-West 2025 Youth Pally and to present the achievements of President Tinubu’s administration after two years in office.
Tension heightened last month after US President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that Christianity in Nigeria faced an “existential threat” from radical Islamist groups.
He claimed that “thousands of Christians are being killed” and said he was designating Nigeria a “country of particular concern.”
Trump further insisted the US “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening,” adding that his administration would be ready, willing and able to protect Christian populations around the world.
He also urged members of Congress to investigate the situation and tasked key lawmakers, including Congressman Riley Moore, Chairman Tom Cole, and the House Appropriations Committee, to report back to him.
On November 1, Trump said he had instructed the Pentagon to draw up “options for possible military measures” against terrorist groups in Nigeria, purportedly to protect Christian communities.
The Federal Government swiftly rejected the claims, with President Tinubu reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom and the protection of all faiths.
The US threats have drawn global attention, with China and Russia reportedly expressing support for President Tinubu and urging Washington to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty
