Government Bans ‘Sign Out’ Parties In Schools
The Oyo State Government has stopped final-year secondary school students in both public and private schools from holding “sign out” celebrations across the state.
The announcement was made in Ibadan during the 2025/2026 pre-resumption meeting with school principals.
The state explained that the decision was taken after repeated cases of violence, misconduct, and public disturbances linked to the practice.
For years, “sign out” celebrations have seen students write on their uniforms, march in groups, and sometimes block streets.
While many viewed it as a farewell tradition, authorities pointed out that it often resulted in unruly behaviour, accidents, and vandalism.
The government said the ban was part of wider steps to improve discipline in schools.
Other measures include strict monitoring of approved textbooks, the continued restriction on students’ use of mobile phones, and the warning against illegal levies by school heads.
According to the Ministry of Education, the goal is to protect students, create a safe learning environment, and ensure no child is denied education because of unauthorised fees.
Teachers and principals were urged to show commitment to punctuality, student safety, and active learning as schools resume.
Education stakeholders at the meeting backed the move and praised Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration for giving priority to the welfare of teachers and students in the state.
