32 Years After Babalakin Commission Recommendation: Sayawa Chiefdom to Become a Reality

The Bauchi State Government has announced plans to establish the Sayawa Chiefdom, with its headquarters in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, within the next six months.

Governor Bala Mohammed made this announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting at Government House in Bauchi. He emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing the recommendations of the fact-finding committee on the creation of the Sayawa Chiefdom.

According to the governor, the paramount ruler of the chiefdom, titled “Gunzar,” will be appointed based on specific qualifications and health standards outlined in the committee’s report.

Governor Mohammed expressed regret over the tragic loss of lives during the prolonged ethno-religious conflicts in the Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro areas, which were linked to the struggle for the realization of the Sayawa Chiefdom.

In cases where the chiefdom’s leadership becomes vacant, the two historic clans, San Gami and San Ghshi, will be tasked with nominating candidates to fill the position.

The governor further revealed that non-Sayawa communities residing within the proposed chiefdom will have the option to either remain or exit the new entity. This decision will be determined through a referendum, to be conducted by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC).

Governor Mohammed urged community leaders in the affected areas to educate their constituents about the government’s decision and the steps involved in the process. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to a peaceful, transparent, and inclusive resolution of the matter.

He also clarified that a leadership vacancy in the Sayawa Chiefdom would only arise under specific conditions, such as the resignation, death, or removal of the chief by the government.
